Have you recently had one of those days where you just want to scream? As hard as you try to work around problems, your hands are tied and you just can’t do what you to do. No matter what you do, you run into a brick wall. Sometimes it may even feel a bit hopeless. It’s not fun feeling stifled, whether from your own perceptions or from boundaries placed by others. Often, various segments of society have barriers placed upon them. Invisible as they are, these cultural barriers are stronger than steel. This has been, and continues to be, in varying degrees, the case for women. Imagine how you feel when you just want people to hear you, to acknowledge you, to understand your thoughts, your frustrations and your feelings. This is the reality of groups from which empowerment has been withheld or minimized.

Admission, conceived and choreographed by Elisa-Marie Alaio, is firewall dance theater’s answer to the call for empowerment for women. Six dancers take you through the journey of womanhood. They explore the act of recognizing and understanding their problems, the ability to find and accept help and support, and the joy of rising above those challenges.

Using props that include silhouetted screens, ropes, and chairs, the dancers demonstrate their individual frustrations and discontentment. As they reach out into the world, they are forced to recognize the boundaries and barriers placed upon them. Struggling to overcome these both as individuals and as a group, they realize that they each must use their own special talent to help both themselves and the group move forward… to break free from the ties that bind them. But alas, that is not the end of the journey. Only when each lifts each other up, is true liberation realized and freedom can be embraced.

Come experience the struggles and ultimately the triumph of these six women who represent womanhood through the movement and expression of dance.
