TIME TO RECONCILE?

We often hear the saying “Life is short, so ____.”  How would you fill in the blank? Here are some common answers: Life is short, so have fun. Life is short, so live life to the fullest. Life is short, so be happy. And the list goes on. But how often to you hear someone say “Life is short, so look past your differences and your struggles and give the gift of acceptance”?  Not typically the first thought that comes to mind, but should it be? After all, what we’re really talking about here is reconciliation.

Look at the common answers: have fun, live life to the fullest, be happy. Who is at the center of these responses? Ourselves. But when we start talking about reconciliation and acceptance, it’s no longer only about ourselves. It’s now about our relationship with another.

Reconciliations need not be limited to someone with whom you’ve lost touch with or had a huge fight with. No, reconciliations can be life changing even over smaller actions. Any of those ‘little things’ (habits, expectations, hurtful actions or words) that drive two or more individuals apart.

I would not be surprised if a specific person already came to mind as someone you might consider reconciling with. If so, you’re not alone.  If not, give it a thought. Who comes to mind? A friend, a sibling, or perhaps even a parent. If your mother came to mind, then you have an immediate connection with our upcoming play, Mother Lode.

Mother Lode is the story of Linda Haston and her mother Ruth, both of the Pittsburgh Hill District. Keep in mind that most all relationships can benefit from reconciliation and acceptance. So when this mother-daughter relationship begins to experience the stressors of a new phase in life for each woman, unresolved differences and expectations come to a head. Ruth, Linda’s mother, expects her daughter to care for her as she ages. She is her only daughter after all. Linda has her own career. She wants to help with her mother’s care, but really, she can’t do it all. But Ruth expects Linda to be available at any time and for any reason, and that includes during her on-stage rehearsals. Linda tries to be accommodating, she tries to appease. She loves her mother, but enough is enough. Something has to give.

Join us at Carnegie Stage for the world premiere of Mother Lode to see how these two independent women came to terms during this time in their lives and how they learned to reconcile with one another and to accept each other. If you have someone in your life you’ve been considering reconciling with, this play just might be the inspiration you need.
